about
Antinobility and anticlericalist song of protest, Lamento is an exchange between a workman and an image of Jesus
perceived as a defender of the humbles. The text is a sonnet by an anonymous author, probably from 18thCentury,
published by Lionardo Vigo Calanna, poet and philologist from Acireale, in 1857. Domenico Modugno set Lamento
to music making it into his Malarazza, and Dario Fo included it in Ci ragiono e canto. Surprisingly, here Jesus Christ
invites to revolt, instead of calling for forgiving one’s executioner.
The musical part was inspired by the meeting and partnership with Senegalese griot Aliou Ndiaye,
and as forthe chorus in Wolof language by Aliou Diop, friend and activist.
